Report on meeting held on 7th August 2025
Members' Displays - "Triangulars, Diamonds and other odd-shaped stamps" Seven displays on this ‘odd-shaped’ topic. Michael Mawdsley began with diamond and triangle stamps mentioning equilateral and isosceles triangles (bringing back memories of school) and interesting kidney-shaped stamps from Bahamas. Ken Parrott followed with worldwide stamps including Maltese odd-shaped stamps. ‘Smilers’ sheets were also a part of his display. Mike Houchen was next up with Lundy, well known for the island’s triangular stamps. Also, part sheets, covers, Europa overprints etc. Tony Arnold showed the odd-shaped Norfolk Island stamps and many other shapes and sizes of stamps and labels. Rick Wilmot had some material which he had shown before called Idiosyncratic Philately. A couple of additions were there including the 2024 Austrian beer mat with the gummed postage stamp in the centre and weird fabric ‘stamps’ from Armenia and Austria. Mike Goodman showed a weird and wonderful selection from USA and Canadian maple leaf shaped stamps. Finally, Alan King had six pages of very impressive Cape Triangulars from 1853. An interesting commentary on the paper used and the colours from the shades of red to the one shilling green. And just for fun Alan showed some French heart-shaped valentine stamps and some diamond shaped sports stamps from Hungary. I never cease to be amazed at what people find to display. whatever the topic, and this evening was no exception! The images are self-explanatory |

Report on meeting held on 17th July 2025
Members' Displays - "Britons on Overseas Stamps" 24 people attended the meeting including four visitors. 8 members displayed their presentations.
Brian Snape began with an unusual stamp from Italy from 2022 showing the aging progression of Queen Elizabeth’s head. It is unusual because Italy does not normally show foreign royalty on their stamps. He also showed pictures of QE2 bronze coinage with similar gaging progression. Ken Parrott followed with Royalty, Churchill, Shakespeare and Dr. David Livingstone (I presume). All from various overseas countries. Tony Arnold next with many stamps from overseas depicting Baden Powell and other stamps of scouting interest. Michael Mawdsley showed stamps from Sarawak. These stamps showed Charles J. Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak. Brooke was born in Berrow, Somerset, 1829. He was the nephew of James Brooke, who was the first of the so-called "White Rajahs" of Sarawak. Gareth Williams showed a part of his very nice collection of Newfoundland. Gareth spoke about the stamps of early explorers, e.g. Sir Wilfred Grenfell a missionary from Cheshire, John Guy the first proprietary governor of Newfoundland Colony, and Sir Humphrey Gilbert born in 16th century Devon. Rick Wilmot brought a variety of personalities on stamps from overseas. These included the Australian seafarers stamps from the 1960s, the 1940 sheet of 8 different colour stamps of Rowland Hill, Charles Darwin on Russian and Polish stamps, Thomas Paine on USA stamp. Among others were the lesser known Harry Pollitt and John Maclean, two British politicians on Russian stamps. After the break, David Wilkins showed the Portuguese 1940 Rowland Hill stamps as used singles together with a nice set from El Salvadore, 1940, also showing Hill. Other stamps included QE2 royal visit to Ethiopia, 1965. Simon Adams showed stamps of Walter Raleigh and the Pitcairn stamps of John Adams, born 1767 in London. Finally, Gareth returned with more Newfoundland stamps and covers showing the royal tour of 1939. An evening enjoyed by everyone |
